Originally posted as MA 101, as part of a multi-state route from Chaplin, CT to Plymouth. US 44 was designated in 1935. 101 appears to have taken a more southerly routing from Taunton to Middleboro; when renumbered to US 44 in 1935, it appears to have taken a routing closer to its current route. Between 1961 and 1966, Middleboro was bypassed to the north.
