History

First appears in 1950. When the Rt 24 highway appeared by 1953, 79 paralled it to the west (south of Assonet). Between 1961 and 1966, the Western Expressway into Fall River was built almost to the city limits and the route number was moved onto the highway as it is now. The highway was completed between 1977 and 1979.

MassHighway officials have announced plans to relocate MA 79 near it’s intersection with MA 105. The new road would meet 105 slightly further south than it does now, reducing issues where the two currently meet near I-495. The $2.8-million project would begin in summer 2009. [1]
