After some struggle, mostly due to me working six days a week during the 1998 holiday season, the MassPike exit guide joins the Web. The names associated with the exit numbers appear on the toll tickets. Construction on the Pike began in 1955 (well, okay, the ceremonial first spade of dirt was turned then); the highway opened in May 1957. The opening speed limits were 60 mph for cars, 50 mph for trucks. Howard Johnson's restaurants were located at the rest areas; eastbound at Lee, Ludlow, Charlton and Natick; westbound at Framingham, Charlton, Ludlow and Blandford. There were also ten service stations along the route.
