In 1930, 140 connected New Bedford to Grafton, much as it does now (except the highway section). West of there, there was no route that connected the towns. By 1933, the section from West Boylston to Winchendon was numbered MA 64. By 1939, the entire route was 140.
Between 1953 and 1956, part of Rt 140’s southern end (from modern exit 9 to the New Bedford limits) had been shifted to the west. (MA 18 took some of the old roadway). By 1959, this section was shown as 4 lanes. By 1966, it was expressway, and had been extended north to MA 24. Between 1967 and 1969, the 140 expressway was proposed to run south to meet I-195 just west of New Bedford. The 1970 state highway map shows a small section of divided highway in New Bedford south of 195 to Pearl St. AAA shows the divided section extending south to US 6 by 1975; the state shows it by 1979.
